ROMOS has a good answer. The blackout is a red flag for me. Someone who has no reference to himself aside from that?

It simply means the picture they tried to upload did not take or has disappeared. Sometimes a person hotlinks a picture from the internet and that picture is coded in such a way that the link going back to the site the picture was taken from gets broken. This causes the avatar to go black as the picture was removed.
