California is huge. If you enjoy a more rural setting, go to the northwest (about 6 hours north of San Francisco on Highway 101). Humboldt County is fabulous. Six Rivers National Forest and the California Redwoods are awesome.
San Francisco and Napa Valley are spectacular.
Yosemite and Sequoia National Park are traditional tourist must-see.
Southern California is full of attractions. There are a lot of wonderful beaches, too. For that matter, Pismo and Morro Bay are nice, too...and cooler.
Santa Cruz and the Boardwalk are fun. Cambria and Hearst Castle are interesting.
Solvang, San Diego, Highway 49 (Gold Country), Sacramento (capital and lots of history, plus the waterways).
I don't get too far past Santa Monica and Venice Beach, but I would highly recommend the San Diego Zoo, Knott's Berry Farm, Marine World/Africa USA, Universal Studios, Disneyland.
There are mountain and deserts and everything in between. Manzanar was a "gated community" for Japanese during WWII; sad history there.
I would suggest getting the AAA travel guides for Northern and Southern California. They have SOOOO much information.
Have fun; be safe.
