All of you drivers out there, do you ever stop to let a pedestrian cross in front of you?

In Texas, the pedestrians have the right of way, do you observe this......?

Absolutely.  Pedestrians have the right of way.

But convincing the driver's of that rule........?

I am a driver and this is British Columbia... We are seriously polite. If one of us is not... that dude or dudette is not from British Columbia. Or................ they are on BC .... the business of Mission.

Yes, I do.  When I'm going somewhere I always leave in plenty of time so it's not a big deal to let those who are walking cross safely, whether they're at an intersection or jaywalking.

    jhharlan

Thank you. You'd be surprised by the number of people who actually speed up.....!
    Dardaigh

That's so weird...it's like they resent the pedestrians for walking on their road! :(
    jhharlan

They're afraid they'll lose a couple of seconds driving.......
    Dardaigh

Too true...same as the ones who basically run a red light and you're sitting next to them at the red at the next set of lights.

jh...in my area, many drivers attempt to beat the pedestrian through the crosswalk, so I know exactly what you are talking about. I always glance both ways when I'm walking, as I've had some close calls.

I most definitely do, it's the least I can do considering they're stuck inhaling my exhausts. It doesn't matter if a person is in a crosswalk or not, I let them cross the street. I most especially make a point of stopping to help children cross the street, so that oncoming traffic get the hint to stop and let the kiddo cross the street.

    jhharlan

    Wish you were driving here.....!

Absolutely, I stop to let pedestrians cross in front of me.  But I rev the engine and honk the horn when they are right in front of me. My car is in park, but if you give it enough gas, it lurches just a little, and that scares the cr*p out of the peds.
    Not really.
Really, I do stop for pedestrians. I appreciate the gesture when I'm a ped, so reciprocate.  I also appreciate a pedestrian who hustles across my path; the ones who dawdle...............

So that was you who made me jump out of my skin...er...feathers. lol

All the time...and for deer, bunnies, various other critters ! It's the law...pedestrians have the right of way in Canada!

Unfortunately, having the right of way, doesn't always mean that that happens. If you do much walking in the city, you have to be really careful at cross walks.
    lambshank

we have signed animal crossings, ducks koala's etc
    lindilou

Do you have them for snakes too Lambie?? :)

Yes I do!  Our town has a number of cross-walks.  Supposedly, it is mandatory to stop when people attempt to use them.  The way I see it, our community acquires a friendlier aura if drivers follow this practice.  Stopping for pedestrians might remind other drivers to extend that courtesy, as well.  It only takes a second or two; it is one of the smallest ways a person can bring a bit of sanity to a downward spiraling society.

    jhharlan

I wish all people thought like you.....

Yes..I do....It`s the law here too in the UK!...But I`d always stop anyway!!:-)

Yes, I do. In most towns, its the law.

It's mandatory in my state to stop at all crosswalks. I would stop even without the law. I learned by experience that I hate waiting for traffic to pass when trying to cross a busy street. I wouldn't want to make someone else wait like that.

    lambshank

It's law here too at designated crossings, but infuriates me when pedestrians wander all over the road here and expect you to go around them, or are arrogant enough not to move at all

The law here states that you must stop for pedestrians who are at a crossing.So....Yes,I always stop at crossings for them or if they are not at a crossing I will stop for them provided it is safe for me to do so.Many,Many  years ago when I was taking my test for semi trailers I stopped for a pedestrian on a busy street. The testing officer told me "Don't pander to pedestrians".(His words verbatim).I didn't lose any points off my test for it but he let me know that it wasn't the right thing to do.

"" they were on the road not on water

    Mycatsmom they are thanks xxx

I was a little annoyed at the fat lady in the mini skirt and the tight sweater. She was in the cross walk and I kinda inched out because I was distracted. I didn’t plan on hitting her
Anyway a traffic cop caught me inching out and he gave me a ticket for $??. (A lot) I am very careful not to get distracted now.  I can’t imagine not letting a pedestrian cross!

    lindilou

Is it possible that your instincts were to 'herd' her? Hmmm? LOL!!!
    Bob/PKB

A few years back, a friend and I stopped for a group of 4 "youths" to cross the street (Chestnut and Kings Canyon). They dawdled and swaggered and went as slow as was humanly possible. The friend took his foot off the brake and the car rolled forward just enough to "touch" one of the hot shots. You should have seen the look on his face as he and the other 3 scrambled across the street. I don't mind stopping for ANYbody, but MOVE IT. My vehicle can do a lot more damage to your body that you can do to its body.

Would you be annoyed if the fat lady was a slim lady?

Yes..I do....It`s the law here too in the UK!...But I`d always stop anyway!!:-)

I always do and i stop for all animals crossing the road including the ducks with her babies as this happened yesterday

    Dardaigh

Awwww, what a beautiful sight that must have been, Mel! :)
    melandrupert

    melandrupert

    Dardaigh thanks xxx
    melandrupert

    Thanks Doolittle xxx

I do, but I sure wish the crosswalk in the center of our village didn't have parking spaces so close to it (which obstructs the pedestrians starting to cross).

No. Around here, in the Detroit area, it's open season on pedestrians.    ; -)

    doolittle

We used to joke about that....even had a scoring system in place.

Yes I do in the town and villages, it's the law here in the UK ,I think once someone is walking across the road they have the right of way.

    Dardaigh

Still have the ole zebra crossings, Sunny?
    sunnyB

Yes we still have them, but most of them are in bad need of repainting, so you can miss them easily. The councils don't have the money to paint them , too busy Paying themselves.
    Dardaigh

I think city councils are the same the world over. lol

Yes!  Always!  Even J-walkers if the speed limit and person behind me allow it.  I get honked at at cross-walks all of the time.  Oh well.  I stop for critters too...and get laughed at for saving worms in parking lots!

    Dardaigh

I accidentally painted a couple of legs on a spider a few days ago, Doo.
I thought of you immediately and then thought "Oh no! What would Doo say?" But the litte beggar ran like crazy, so he couldn't have been too hurt. lol
    doolittle

LOL- I'm sure the spidey is OK- you get to name it!!!
    Dardaigh

Well, I checked around at Spider Naming Sites...on the ...ahem..."web"...(what don't they have on the internet?) and came up with Kaelan. It means Mighty Warrior, an' the poor l'il guy needs a decent name, after having two of his legs painted blue. Maybe he's now a bluestocking. :)
    doolittle

Excellent name! I have sent a message through the "origional" web site and word should be getting to Kaelan soon! (although 'cobs' tend to be slow messengers).
    Dardaigh

Sturdy litte fellows, those cobs. I'm also thinking of a tortoise name for myself as Colleen says that's how fast I run! LMAO! ;)
    doolittle

:) I will ask my turtle friends for a lovely name!!!
    Dardaigh

Go raibh maith agat mo chara - Thank you my friend. :)
(Had to look it up on G. Translate.) LOL
    doolittle

So, there are many turtles, tortoises, etc. But my Caribbean Sea Turtles came up with a lovely name- Special One!k
    Dardaigh

Awwwwww, I am absolutely honoured that they chose that name for me!! A big xo for both them and you! :) LOL

90% of the time, yes.  The other 10%?  Guilty.

Here in my town anyone walking is lucky not to have a car stopped right in the middle of the cross walk. In a few years they will be stopping for a red light in the middle of the intersection.

    mycatsmom

Around here, they run red lights all the time. One cop asked a driver, " Don't you know what a yellow light means ? '' and the driver said,
" Yeah. It means go like hell before it turns red! "
    Ed1530

Yepper, some around here say, “fresh red is as good as green any day of the week”

Yes i do in fact i installed brake lights on the front of my car just to let em know I'm thinking of them..

    Dardaigh

You are one zany guy but so funny, too!

Always, If their J-walking I give them a sonic ear cleaning.

oh my, I thought they were just artistic  speed humps

    jhharlan

Great answer, this often how I feel....

    yes

    yes I do
