I wouldn't call it a lie.  People DO think they will be happy when they get what they want.  It just may be that too often what most of us want is not what we need for true happiness.

Not a lie but a mass media delusion.The answer to this is that this delusion is perpetuated by the media in an effort to sell whatever it is they are trying to sell us to "make" us happy! It's like wakeful hypnosis in a way and maintains it's roots in the time=consciousness equation. "I possess a desire for the future...that desire is satisfied in the present....my dis-satisfaction or regret is now of the past.So I may then create a new desire. I think it was the ancient Master Lao Tzu who was purported to have said   "Thought rots the mind...Desire withers the heart.."   I also quote anonymous with "Happiness is like a puppy chasing its' tail...he catches it...and then lets go to begin the pursuit again"!!!

Not always. A lot of times we think we know what we need to be happy. The problem with that is there are some many things we know nothing about that could make us happy. Some people find happiness watching the sun rise, getting to go to a job where they enjoy it there. Taking less than 2 hours in traffic to get to work or home. I find happiness by filling my spiritual void.
