Colleen: The century does not matter. No child needs a cellphone. They should be at school at home or at a friends house where the parents can call them or they can call the parents. Cellphones cause more trouble with kids than they are worth. You should not answer your own question either. This should have been added to the topic title area.

To keep in contact with their parents primarily, and it's the way of the world now, it's not going to change anytime soon.

yeo agree..security!(i think i`m turning into a security freak)!;-)

I THINK KIDS do OFTEN NEED THEM..OR WORRIED PARENTS..(hysterical one`s like me)!!;-)....I wouldn`t let my older kids ..under 16 travel to school and back and out early evening..or anytime in the day ...(NO..OF COURSE I`D ALLOW THEM..BUT AM FAR HAPPIER that they can get in touch at anytime...Sadly it`s a JUNGLE OUT THERE THESE DAYS!!(AS ANY GOOD LION SHOULD KNOW)!!!;-))lol!!

They don't need phones anymore than they need facebook except it's the "norm". Keeping in touch with the folks is a plus but I doubt that's number one in their minds.....

I question the need for cellular phones quite often.  I don't have a home phone anymore, just the cell phone, which I take everywhere.  In the "olden days", people had telephones at home and no answering machines.  Now there are answering machines.  It still isn't enough; we need phones with us all the time AND those phone have answering machines built right into them.

I don't like kids having phones at school at all.  Check them at the gate, and pick them up after school.  When I am working, my phone is silenced. I'll check it at break time, but don't take a personal call on company time.
