Eminem has put his new movie, Southpaw, on hold to begin work on his next studio album. The film signaled the rapper’s first time back on the big screen in over a decade, but now it looks like we will have an even longer wait.

Eminem’s spokesman Dennis Dennehy told the Detroit Free Press, “He’s focusing on his music right now, so while he’s doing that, while he’s in that space, he wanted to put this on hold for the time being.” Eminem’s new album will be a follow-up to 2010’s Recovery, although his most recent release was actually the Bad Meets Evil EP, Hell: The Sequel he made with Royce da 5′9′ last year.

Southpaw, a film about a boxer who must overcome misfortune to get back on top, has already suffered several setbacks during its production. The rapper plays a “a fast-rising welterweight boxer who brawls his way to the title, only to see his world crash down around him due to a tragedy,” but it’s unclear when the film will be finished. Eminem’s first film since his semi-autobiographical 8 Mile, the plan is to shoot the film in Detroit, which will allow for government incentives for local hires and locations. Dennehy said, “What I’m told is when the film does get made, the plan is that the bulk of it will be shot in Michigan. That was always the understanding.”

While we do want to see Eminem return to acting, we’re more excited for the promise of new music. The rapper has been making festival rounds lately, appearing with 50 Cent at SXSW and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg at Coachella, so it seems like he’s inspired.
