    Why does WRAL interrupt programs to give news that could be told at 5:00 or 6:00 p.m.?

    Most channels do this to give the impression that they have "up to the minute" news coverage. It also advertises their own channel.

    Still not a good enough reason to interrupt a program and make people miss part of their program that is on.
