I've mentioned a Foley Cath before. It is used when someone isn't able to pee on their own. It goes up the urethra into the bladder for drainage....

A urinary catheter may be inserted for several reasons...One if you can`t pass urine,(ie are in retention)...Usually a temporary measure until investigation of cause of retention...temporary partly because the longer it`s insitu..the more chance a patient has of introducing an infection to the bladder etc!...Ano reason is if a patient is not mobile eg post op...Ano is if a person has chronic urinary incontinence and risks bedsores and infections...so that the patient is not lying in urine if they can`t assess when they have the urge to urinate.Ano is for fluid balance monitoring..so that the amount passed and the fluid intake is monitored to ensure that the patient is not in negative balance...to ensure they are not getting dehydrated.

A catheter can be to use for insertion of medications into the bloodstream, without having to tap into the vein for each injection. The cath is inserted into the vein, and then capped. When meds are needed, they inject into the seal of the cap. Another type of catheter is a urinary catheter, this is inserted into the urethra and has an inflatable bulb at the end, which keeps it from falling out. This is connected to a collection bag and the urine is delivered outside of the body with it.
