    2 |4x| - 8 = 16
    8x - 8 = 16
    8x - 8 + 8 - 16 + 8
    8x = 24
    8x/8 = 24/8 = 3
    2 (4*3) - 8 = 16
    2 (12) - 8 = 16
    24 - 8 = 16
    16 = 16

    From what I can remember about absolute values, wouldn't you have to clear the absolute value bars by splitting the equation into two possible cases, one for each sign? You did the positive, now you have to do the negative.

    (8x) - 8 = 16
    8x - 8 = 16
    8x = 24
    x = 3

    -(8x) - 8 = 16
    -8x - 8 = 16
    -8x = 24
    x = -3

    x = 3, -3
    P.S. How do you type the absolute value bars?

    In mathematics, the absolute value (or modulus) | a | of a real number a is the numerical value of a without regard to its sign. So, for example, the absolute value of 3 is 3, and the absolute value of –3 is also 3. The absolute value of a number may be thought of as its distance from zero. (Wikipedia)
