Where can I find information on lawn grass diseases in Massachusetts?

My lawn is well maintained.  This early spring the lawn was fully green everywhere.  In early May I noticed a few brown spots developing here and there.  During the last several weeks the brown areas have grown considerably in size until some of the patches have grown together.  I cut the grass twice a week with a hand reel mower at a height of about 2-inches.  There has been plenty of rain this spring so it has not been necessary to water.  What is causing these brown spots and what can I do to get rid of them?  I'm afraid I will lose the whole lawn to some disease or insect.  Help.

Have you pulled up on the brown turf, if it comes up like carpet, then you have Japanese Beetle Grubs.  Use Grubex, or a similar granule product that kills grubs in lawns.  This is my best guess, you can also dig in the soil and see the white grubs, like fat short worms.  They are eating on the roots of your grass, thus the grass dies, and becomes brown patches.  This would be the best place to start.  You could call UMass Extension Service, good luck.
