The highest ranked European skater in the 2005 NHL Draft, Kopitar was selected 11th overall by the Las Angeles Kings.[2] He moved to North America in 2006 and joined the Kings, where he finished third in scoring among NHL rookies. In 2008, his third season with the Kings, Kopitar signed a seven year contract extension with the team, which would keep him with the team until 2016. One of the top scoring players in the NHL, Kopitar has led the Kings in scoring for four seasons, all consecutive, and finished in the top five in each season, and has been selected to the NHL All-Star Game twice. Internationally, Kopitar has played for the Slovenian national team in several junior and senior tournaments.
