Wait! If that's the case then do not use lime as it will affect those precious Sage trees! Now what you must do is remove the topsoil to about 6 inches deep and dispense with it elsewhere.Then just amend the site with fresh composted soil..not too rich as sage will do well in a sandy loam soil as well.
Lime is a neutralizer that sort of kills everything underneath it while also amending the soil with nutrients over time as water/rain percolates through it,dispersing it.Sadly it tends to kill the plants around it...the next year whatever does grow back is rich and lush..usually crabgrass!! Peace.

You've got to spread lime in a thick layer over the area ..say 3-6 inches.This acts as a neutralizer and should help rid the stench sufficiently.The thicker a layer the better!

Where was it----in your house ? If it died in your house, open all the windows to air it out; and wash the walls and floors.
The deer died outside in the flowerbed against our house. I'll get some lime tomorrow. Do I need to leave it a few days then remove the lime? Will the lime kill our bushes? (Purple sage trees about eight feet tall) Thank you for your advice.
