Uric acid is the product that is building up in certain joints and yes it does crystalize. Imagine a crystal, a mineral like coral, within the joint. To also remind you that joints are where there are suppose to be very smooth surfaces which glide over each other and fit the contours of each other exactly, just enough clearance for them to work with some joint fluid for lubrication. Now place a few crystalline structures into this joint and you get that extreme pain called gout. With the pain and abrasion comes swelling, and the problem may actually be more intense from the swelling. There are medications that help to relieve the problem of swelling and dissolve the crystals. Some foods in certain people cause this disease, but not with everyone. Learn which foods to avoid, and you can help to manage symptom free.
