The break up ended with alot of hatred on his part. I made a huge mistake and want to rekindle things. He's divorced and out of state. Should I talk with him and what do I say.

      all you can do is tell him exactly what you said here and prove to him how sorry you have been all these years. after that just sit back and wait for him to answer. it may take some time for him to do so but if he does not give you a sign of any kind then you must move on. you have done your part to correct this mistake but do not expect anything just because you stuck your neck out there. the only good thing you should get out of this is your piece if mind after you told him how you feel. after that if he decides to contact you ,it will be the icing on the cake for you.good luck.
