it sounds as if the actuator or solenois that engages the front diff got stuck. this is located o the transfer case and looks like a wiper motor. i hardly ever see the 4x4 light switch go bad. you should check the power going to the actuator with a test light or volt meter and check for 12 volts and the ground. if the actuator is stuck you can try and tap with a hammer on the actuator itself and that may take care of the light on the dash board.good luck
