Preparation of the site, planning the garden, actual planting, maintaining the garden, harvesting, planting for successive harvests, putting the bed to rest for the winter.
Prep. of the site, test soil; consider possible hours of sunlight; security from pests (insects and large animals) using fences; soil improvements as per soil test, does it drain or is it soggy? Fertilizer and compost application, tilled/plowed beds. Some create rows between beds to walk on, drive equipment, etc.
Watering/irrigation systems-plan and install prior to when needed.
Planting Will you start own seeds? Allow proper time so seedlings are ready when it is time to plant ("last frost date"). Style of planting, direct seed, or started seedlings. Mulching for weed control and water retention. Caging and trellising plants.
Pest control, will it be an Organic garden (law required proof of no chemical usage for over 5 yrs. in order to market as "Organic" . Will you use pesticides, chemical fertilizer?
Harvesting crops Plan the "days to harvest" so you get a harvest when you need it, begin with last frost date, as your earliest planting date, add the days to harvest = expected harvest date. Insure that all crops grown will be harvested by "first frost date"
