How a rift valley forms. Put your two hands together like you are praying but fingers straight out in front of you like you are about to dive into water. Thumbs straight up. On the right side of your right hand is one plate, and on the left side of your left hand is another plate. When the plates diverge, or separate because of currents deep inside the earth, in the middle layer of molten rock under the crust, its like when you move your thumbs apart, then move your index fingers apart, then the middle fingers, then the ring fingers, keep the bottom of your palms and your pinky fingers touching each other. Now between your palms is a rift valley.
Convergent boundaries - The earth's crustal plates are floating on the molten middle layer of the earth. When two plates float toward each other, and touch, thats a convergent boundary. Calif. is an example, the Pacific Ocean's plate is moving under Calif and the North American continent.
