1
Find speech-to-text conversion programs online. A simple Google search of "convert voice to text" or "convert speech to text" will yield a wide variety of results, from expensive, highly-specialized programs to basic, free downloads.
2
Choose the program that best meets your needs. Consider what you will be using it for. If you just need to convert a speech into a text file this once and will likely never use the program again, opt for a free one, such as the one offered by Brothersoft of by NaturalSoft. If you plan to use the program on a regular basis and need it to perform specialized functions like learn legal or medical terms, opt for a paid program like those offered by Nuance. Natural Soft also offers a paid program.
3
Download your desired program. Follow the instructions on the manufacturer or seller's website to do this. Usually, there is a button to download it. If using a paid program, you will have to pay for it first.
4
Install the program on your computer. The installation process may vary slightly from one program to another. However, once the download is complete, you will get a set of prompts instructing you how to install the program step by step.
5
Download the voice file to your computer. If you recorded it using a digital voice recorder, this may be as simple as plugging one end of a cord from your digital recorder into your computer. Once you do this, you will typically be able to navigate to "My Computer" and see your external device among your drives. Click on the device and then on the sound file. Copy the sound file by right clicking on your mouse, then navigate to the location on your computer where you'd like to save it, and right-clicking on your mouse again to paste.
6
Run the speech-to-text program. After installation is complete, you will see an icon for the application on your desktop. Click on the icon to open and run the program. All programs work slightly differently, but generally, you will get a window allowing you to locate a sound file on your computer. You will click on the sound file to open it using the speech-to-text program. The program will then convert the voice file to text.
