I am trying to figure out if I can paint over the walls in my kitchen?

I'm not sure even what kind of material it is. Its almost like a pressed cork board?? it's a very old kitchen.  At first I thought it was wall paper. but the print on the wall, is actually IN/ON whatever material they used to cover the top part of the kitchen.  I can see the back of it, when I'm standing on the basement stairs....i thought maybe particle board? but it's more like cork?? any ideas? maybe pics would help me figure out this material??  My fiance and I are going to sell the house, but we want to fix up the kitchen without having to rip out all of the walls...

It sounds like a meterial called "Caneite" to me.It should be paintable with water based paint.Use an exterior product for better adhesion.

If you can see this(?)from the basement,it has some depth to it.You may find yourself openning up a can of worms.IE;multiple coats of paint(u need to paint more than three coats),this unknown(?) material falling from the wall because of the moisture or weight from the paint, thefinished paint job looking worse than the old wall itself due to uneven adhesion or adsorption of new paint. There are more variables involved ,however ,I can't speculate any further without seeing what kind of wall covering is on your kitchen wall.

The easy solution is to first buy a primer that is good for both alkyd and latex, and apply that first(very important step). Then paint your choise of covering over the primer.

FYI...I used to work in a paint factory and I am now and have been a general contractor for over ten years

k, i have pics...but not sure how to post them on here...lol....i reposted them in a new question like this one. lol

when you're standing on the stairs to go to the basement (which is right off the kitchen)  the backside of the wall isn't covered, so when standing on the stairs, I can see the backside of the wall covering...along with the backs of outlets and wiriing....it's a VERY old house....not sure how old, I can ask. I'll be there tomorrow night. I can take some pics and i'll email them to you. thanks!!
