The Stations of the Cross is a popular devotion used by individuals or groups who wish through prayer and reflection to follow Jesus Christ on his way to Calvary. Many Christians practice the devotion, but the Stations holds a special significance among Roman Catholics. It is one of the most important devotions honoring the passion of Jesus.
What matters most in the Stations of the Cross is to follow Jesus Christ in his passion and to see ourselves mirrored in him. To face life's dark side in ourselves and in our world, we need images of hope, and Jesus offers images of hope in his passion. By accompanying him on the Way of the Cross, we gain his courageous patience and learn to trust in God who delivers us from evil.

There are a different # os Stations...depending on the denomination...Here is a full list of 14 Stations. Good Friday is the traditional day for people to "walk" the stations meditating on what Jesus went through and saying prayers because this is the day that Jesus Was condemned to death, walked with a cross on his back-or shoulder to Golgotha also referred to as Calvary..a hill outside of the walls of Jerusalem where they killed criminals by hanging them on the cross.
1) Jesus is condemned to death 2) Jesus carries his cross. (He had to walk through the streets of Jerusalem, out of the wall gates, and onto the hill carrying the cross with him) 3) Jesus falls with the cross for the 1st time 4) Jesus meets his mother (while walking) 5) Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross. 6) Veronica wipes the face of Jesus 7) Jesus falls the 2nd time 8) Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem (still walking) 9) Jesus falls a 3rd time (keep in mind the cross was essentially a heavy log(s) 10) Jesus clothes are taken away 11) Jesus is nailed to the cross 12) Jesus dies on the cross 13) Jesus' body is taken down off of the cross 14) Jesus' body is laid in the tomb
I hope this helps.
