Treat them with respect always, but make it clear that their performance is a direct reflection on your ability to manage. Tell them that failure to meet the companies requirements may mean that some heads will roll, and it's not going to be yours.

For a number of years I managed several companies. My policy was every week a meeting was held right after lunch which took maybe 15 minutes or so. I made it very clear that if production was not met as per our contractual responsibilities, I would have no choice but to replace individuals not capable of doing what they were hired to do. I never lost sleep firing a deadbeat. My superior would have canned me in a minute if I couldn't do the job which I was hired to do and that was to MANAGE. My knick name was "the ice man". Rightfully so.
