2x - 5 = 36x - 8 + 71
2x - 5 = 36x + 63
2x - 5 + 5 + 36x + 63 + 5
2x = 36X + 68
2x - 36x = 36x - 36x + 68
-34X = 68
x/-34 = 68/-34
x = -2
2(-2) - 5 = 4{(9*-2) -2} + 71
-4 - 5 = 4(-18 - 2) + 71
-9 = -72 - 8 + 71
-9 = -80 + 71
-9 = -9

wow no wonder i never took this it makes no sense to me,, my poor kids,, i randomly picked your question, to help my son with an entirely different ?...i.e. in how many ways can you choose 2 side dishes out of 10,,the teachers paper had 45 as an answer, to look in here, the answer is 90,, i cannot undedrstand the path to that
combine the side dishes as follows:
1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8, 1/9, 1/10

2X= 4 x ((9X-2) + 71) + 5 or ....
2X = 36X - 8 + 4x71 +5 or ....
-34X = -8 + 284 +5 = 281
thus .... 34X = - 281 or ...
X = - 281/34 = -8.2647
At least I think that's how I did it 65 years ago at school !!! (grin)
