What breed of dog has longest lifespan?

The joy of dog ownership is always tempered by one thing -- our beloved pets don’t live as long as we do.

But finding dogs with the longest life expectancy isn’t as easy as it sounds. That’s because, just as with people, researchers still don’t know what causes aging and why some dogs live longer than others.

“All dog breeds are of the same species, yet they age at apparently very different rates,” says David Waters DVM, PhD, professor and associate director of the Purdue University Center on Aging and the Life Course and director of the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation. “We still don’t understand why.”

Bruce Fogle, DVM, in his book Caring for Your Dog: The Complete Canine Home Reference, says the median life expectancy of dogs is 12.8 years. But dog life expectancies vary widely by breed, ranging from breeds that can live 16 to 20 years (the rare Mexican breed, the Xoloitzcuintle, has a life span of 15-20 years; the Irish Wolfhound has an estimated 6- to 8-year life expectancy.

But there is one concrete piece of advice experts can give people looking for a dog breed with a long life span -- think small.

Dog Life Span: Big vs. Small

Nearly 40% of small breed dogs live longer than 10 years, but only 13% of giant breed dogs live that long. The average 50-pound dog will live 10-12 years. But giant breeds such as great Danes or deerhounds are elderly at 6-8 years.

Kimberly Greer, PhD, an assistant professor at the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Indiana University East, co-authored a study that showed that dogs weighing less than 30 pounds lived the longest. The study analyzed data from more than 700 dogs in 77 breeds.

“It’s the weight, not the height, that matters,” Greer says. “Some dogs are short, like the English bulldog, but can still weigh 60 or 70 pounds. They wouldn’t be considered small breed dogs.”

Mark Stickney, DVM, director of General Surgery Services at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, says although it’s not unusual to see a 17-year-old miniature poodle, a 12-year-old Labrador retriever is considered old, and any dog in the giant breeds -- dogs weighing more than 100 pounds -- is considered geriatric at 6-7 years.

“Generally speaking, the larger your dog is, the less time it will live,” Stickney says.

Dog Life Span: Male vs. Female

Steven N. Austad, PhD, a professor and researcher on aging at the department of cellular and structural biology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, says besides looking at small dogs, people looking for the longest-lived dogs also should look at mixed breed dogs and females.

“Female dogs tend to live a bit longer, although it’s not as pronounced as it is with humans,”

    All I could think of.

Gotta be my old cocker spaniel, he lived to be 14 years old, he actually died when he was 12 but it took him 2 years to fall down.

    bulletman

Vin, were you feeding him 'crack'.
    Vinny

Nah, he was pretty good at getting his own crack, there wasn't a female dog in the neighborhood that didn't at one time or another give birth to his dna.. LOL

I had a dachsund (cross) for 19 years. Got him when I was 20 he died when I was 39.Great little dog.Very protective & faithful. Smart too.

I only wish my little Dacci would live that long but not likely, she is still spritely at 11.

My dachshund lived to be 11 1/2 years old. He was given to me by a friend. It depends on the breeder how healthy dogs are. If they are overbred , the will eventually have major health problems. I think that was the case with my dachshund. I loved that dog and I miss him still every day. They are extremely smart.

A small heinz variety dog i would think would have longevity.

I'm sure it has to do with fasting the larger breeds for one day each week as well as knowing the dog-chiropractic way of lifting and re-adjusting threir hips as this can be a common ailment for these big and often heavy-set dogs. Why I have known so many older dogs I'm certain is due to excellent dog handlers/friends!

Steely Dan Dog was a big Golden Lab retriever who in his prime weighed 105 lbs. and on his dieing day weighed 65 lbs. He was the love of my life for 16 and a half awesome years!!Over the years I've met many Labs who were 15 years old at their last. You might consider one of these fine dogs!!

    bulletman

Lindi, 15 -16 years old for a lab is amazing as these dogs, like my deceased Irish Setters live rarely beyond 10 -11 tears, on ave.

The longest living dog was an Autralian cattle dog named Bluey. He lived till the age of 29.. Another was a border Collie, on a strictly vegetarian Diet, he lived till 27 yrs. old.

Large dogs have a shorter livespan 8-10 yrs, compared to medium and small dogs 10-14 yrs.

My most recent dog was a red cattle dog (Bitch). She lived for 17 years.Sadly she passed last year.

I am sorry about your dog. It really hurts to have to let them go.My Dachsi died Dec. 2nd last year and I still have very bad days, thinking about him.

I haven't had good luck with dogs. They've all been killed one way or the other. Not by me.

my Maltese will be 15 years old on May 12, 2012.  Lately he is not eating well.  I have changed his food from dry to soft and also changed the brand name, to no avail.  What do you recommend?

    Tommyh

He is getting old.Sadly there is not a lot you can do except your best to keep him comfortable. It sounds like you are trying with the right food.He will eat it if he wants it.Good luck.
    Ann

Maybe if cook his meals, he might be eating better. Just give him small meals 3-4 times a day. I used to cook my dog long grain rice, ground beef and vegetables. Make a bigger patch and add Vit.C Powder as preservative. It will keep for a week.Hope this helps.
