Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, as applied to Business today:
1. Physiological needs: The most basic needs for human beings. Employees work better when they get to eat, go to the restroom and breathe clean air in their work place.
2. Security Needs: Start a Pension fund for them. If they know that, after working for 25 years, they can retire comfortably, they are more apt to work harder.
3. Social Needs: The need to be together with fellow employees that like each other presents a loyalty to the team. Many companies stress diversity to bring more interesting interactions.
4. Esteem Needs: After the first 3 needs have been satisfied, this need becomes very important. The need to be recognized by his/her peers is very important to an individual. Hence, an achievement plaque or promotion can be very important to an individual.
5. Self Actualization: The highest level of the pyramid of needs for all human beings. Self-actualizing people are self-aware, concerned with personal growth, and less concerned with the opinions of others, and interested in fulfilling their potential. An example would be a very skilled artist who creates something based on his message and is not based on popularity.

Maslow came up with his Hierachy of Needs What he said was that humans have basic needs EG sex warmth food and when those have been met we have higher needs like safety then higher needs like achievement and growth and so on.. By designing a job which fills these needs you can give your employees satisfaction loyalty and motivation at work.
