Measure the length, width and depth of each planter you need to fill.

Multiply the length by the width by the depth. For example, if the planter is two feet long by 1 foot wide and 1 foot deep, then the dimensions would be 2x1x1 = 2. The dimension of the planter is 2 cubic feet. A planter that is three feet long, two feet wide and a foot deep would be 3x2x1, or 6 cubic feet.

Select the potting soil you wish to buy, and check the weight by volume on the package. The average density of dirt is 120 lbs. per cubic foot, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. To fill a planter with 2 cubic feet of dirt (2 cubic feet x 120 lbs. = 240), you would need four 60-lb. bags of dirt to make up 240 pounds.
