Grits would be a bowl of tasteless mush. Some people top with butter, salt and pepper, while others use cream and sugar. (I see that Ed uses a combination of both.)
Southerners (USA) ...I know, I know, I know....you LOVE them! I think they're nothing more than a tasteless tummy filler. lol!

Hello.. Georgia Girl here.... LOL..... Grits are ground corn. And it is a sin in the South to put sugar or milk in them... (I am a sinner) Salt ,pepper, butter and what ever else you are eating mixed in is perfectly acceptable. (eggs, bacon, sausage, hot sauce...... )

They are really good at least to me, they taste like rice however I like to eat grits with butter, cream and sugar. They were at one time just a byproduct of corn hominy.

I have a big bag of them on my kitchen counter. I love grits with salt, pepper and butter, maybe some hot sauce. I have a friend who loves them with a runny egg on top. I'll also cook them with garlic and add cheese.....

Here's what my maw used to do with "grits"...roast the dry cornmeal in a cast iron pan without oil just to heat it up...meanwhile you've fried up some onions with bacon bits and then add a couple cups of milk to the hot cornmeal and a few beaten eggs, and stir in the fried bacon-onion mixture...then sprinkle a few pinches of crushed black peppercorns on there and pop it in a 350 degrees F oven for 45-50 minutes and Voila!...delicious heart-attack on a plate! Grits...Polish style it's called Natchinka.Peace.
