My two eldest don't have one sense of humor between the two of them... they learned that from their dad.

I cannot brag about my children learning from my example, cause I'd always believe working in this world if you want too get anywhere. Now kid expect everything is free handout, Don't know who to blame for this kind of behavior? Is this what they teach them in schools? I know when I grew up it was a different world and you didn't get away with kind of behavior!

I believe it is difficult today to teach children anything as a parents competition is in their peers, their games they play, the media and less than diverse teachers in schools. They are constantly being bombarded by social netwoks and accptance by friends. Children today are compelled to aclimate to the popular beliefs that make them cool. Parents today have little or no chance to pass on their teachings.
It had always been standard teen protocol to clash with their parents desires and upbringing, this was considered normal - Today, this is not so true, where children may still go against their parents teachings, many do not recover from this 'adolecent' life due to constantly being bombarded with this defunct social input. As parents today, it is very difficult to overcome this. Unless of course you are a parent theat either doesn't care or that you believe in the peer pressure overloads these kids expierence today. Social skills today is wireless communication, not long ago right here on akaQA a question from a young person on what to say to a girl in a text message to get her to like him.. maybe I am getting too old but I do believe we are losing control of our children that we once had.

Robert Fulghum thought that he learned all things that he needed to know in the kindergarden. Without disagreeing I’d say that I learned them from my mom and dad and our children from us following the examples. Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.

Responsibility, hard work, a sense of humor and accountability have always been at the top of the list of things I have mentored to both my own children, and the countless who I have had as students in 35 yrs of teaching high school.
