Yes this ancient method of measurement was by using the width of the hand of a man to get the height of a horse. As you can imagine it was not very precise, as the average mans' hand may be 4 inches, but not all! But after all, size doesn't matter, or does it? It does when measuring a horse, so it was standardized to become exactly 4 inches to equal 1 hand.
