What type of food or drink would you suggest (or NOT suggest) for an American tourist to try when visiting your country?

I think this is pretty interesting, the different types of food and beverages that people enjoy in Australia, England etc. What would you suggest if we Americans come to visit.

Also what would you not suggest, like blood pudding or something kinda bad.

If you are in Edmonton, Alberta you must go to Tony's Pizza.  It is wonderful.  (Sit in the section to the left of the door so that you can watch Tony and his sons throwing the pizza dough into the air... )

If you are in Vancouver, British Columbia you must try Osaka.

In British Columbia we have lots of little wineries and the wine tours are really nice in the interior of British Columbia.

Calgary Alberta has a burger joint called Bob's Hamburgers that is famous and Jann Arden has a restaurant that is lovely and serves delicious food.

That's it for now... back to work. ... specific foods?  This place I call home is multicultural... It makes life interesting and delicious.

Thank you Fishlet, sounds really good. I'll have to get up North to visit our neighbors someday.
    lambshank

I think Im in the wrong country, sounds right up my alley
    CHAIN

    so where does fishlet live?
    FISH-O

    British Columbia, chain. :)

You've Gotta try our King prawns & Mud crabs. We also have a little salt water lobster called a Moreton Bay Bug. Fantastic stuff Leeroy. Wash it down with a Fourex.

    leeroy

Wow, that sounds really good, what's Fourex a beer? One of my best friends is a brewer and chef in California. I've had some great fresh beer when I lived out there. I'm mostly a lager fan, probably because of most American beers are a light lager.
    mycatsmom

    eewwwww
    lambshank

love them all except the xxxx, VB all the way

I would suggest they don't drink Tabasco Sauce   ;-)

    leeroy

I went to a Mexican Restaurant in FL that had a hot sauce drinking contest, it was crazy you would think some big biker type guy would win. But to my surprise it was a very cute young lady that probably weighed 98 lbs. I asked here what was her secret and she said she drinks Tabasco at home to numb her taste buds.

If your going to visit the south, Georgia, NC, SC watch the drinking water. I moved from NYC to North Carolina and had the runs for days till my body got used to the water.

    leeroy

Lol, I think I've drank water in almost every state, thanks for the warning though. I definitely didn't drink the water in Mexico.

I would suggest trying North Carolina BBQ, it's incredible. Especially if you like vinegar. There was a place in FL that did a ton of business on Dixie Highway, the place was packed. It was called the Dixie Pig.
    ed shank

There is no such thing as bad food in America. It's all good.
    doolittle

Watch the water in New Orleans too.
    Jenn

I get sick changing any water source... from my house to my moms or in-laws. Even from tap to bottled water.

Surely the idea when visiting other places is to explore every thing possible including the local food, remember what is reccomended is not allways what we like, more fun to find out for ourselves.

    leeroy

You've gotta have some sort of English dish we isolationist Americans haven't hear about?
    lewboy

Probably but the fun is in looking and finding, plus we are a multiculteral society so lots of different cusiene to try out.
    mycatsmom

    leeroy, they have Shepherd's pie
    lewboy

    And cottage pie

If you were to come to Boston, You can't leave town without visiting the "Noname restaraunt" awesome fish chowda!!

    clu

    leeroy

Alright daren, recipe and all thanks. I pretty much stick to Manhattan style, but will have to try it out sometime...

Americans would love our water holes in Northern Australia, crocs just love you on their menu,  a few Americans  have been taken by the crocs.

    leeroy

As long as gator isn't on the menu I'm o.k.. I've had gator in Naples, FL and it was very good.

An American would enjoy a South Australian Icon, The Pie Floater, a meat pie in pea soup, i hear it is great after a few beers or a large Kangaroo Steak, cooked Whitchity Grubs downed by a Darwin Stubby, a 2.2 litre/ 80 fl oz bottle of beer. --- An of course my  favourite Vegemite.

    ROMOS

Never tried a "cooked" Whitchity Grub, eaten a live one though!
    "LOVELY GRUB"
    KOTF
    bulletman

Romos, tell me what does a whichity grub look like?
    doolittle

Kangaroos..You eat them??? Doo is very disturbed by this news!
    bulletman

Little Doo, as i have already said to another answer previously on this site, there is approx. 20 million Kangaroos in Oz, almost one for evey person, we are only 22 million, to try and stop absolute too many, they are culled and consequently you can buy the meat, skins or a purse made out of the males scrotum, roos have thrive since the coming of Anglo- Saxons. Roo stake is fat and cholesterol free. it is good for you.

If you were to visit my home, I'd plan an Armenian meal for you, with string cheese, basturma, soujik, cracker bread, yalangi, lamajoons, and tourshig for h'ors doeurves.  Madzoon to wash it down. You'd have to try a little bulgar salad and some keyma. Pilaf, shish kebab, souborag, dolma, sarma for the dinner.  Of course, dessert would be kadaif ,  paklava, and rojik.
There is a good-sized Armenian community in Fresno, and I'd serve these because my main heritage is Armenian.   All these things are "typical" fare, with no "weird stuff"  I've also spelled nearly every word incorrectly; sorry about that.

    bulletman

I don't know what you are talking about,Ms Bob, i'm willing to try any new foods. --- see ya there:)
    Bob/PKB

You are welcome anytime, bulletman...bring the family, too.
    Ann

That sounds really interesting. I always like to try new foods, but not from a restaurant.
    Bob/PKB

There will be a place at the table for you! :D
    doolittle

    LOL...cute Bob
    Ann

Thank you. You must be a very good cook.
    FISH-O

Is this gluten free? I bet the paklava isn't. The meal sounds so interesting... sign me up!
    Bob/PKB

COME ONE, COME ALL. I'll do my best to make that paklava gluten-free.....it WILL have nuts, though.
    dowsa

"Sounds very good Bob.I am game for anything "OH love my "Nuts!!maybe that's because I am .

When I went to Mexico the fruit was to die for!!!!

    leeroy

Oh yeah baby, I think Mexico had the best food I've ever had in the world, so far. It's absolutely amazing. The best!!!
    doolittle

    It is!!!!!
    lambshank

    Im jealous
    Tommyh

Been to Mexico twice.Seemed to live on KFC & McDonalds.Didn't trust most of the food unless we were in a really good hotel or restaurant.
    doolittle

umbriel- never saw that on any of the menus orin the market stands as an item...I probably would have bought all of them sans the tabasco sauce and carried them off to a remote place where I could set the beetles free.

well there is nothing kinda bad if you like it, I think we should all try new or food that is new to us when visiting, I really didn't like some of the food from the islands but I did try them, crocodile isn't my cup of tea but I would still encourage visitors to try it, also (dare I say) I don't care for the commercial Aussie pie, but would still suggest visitors here to try one, but the one thing all should try is vegemite, great on a crunchy roll with Smiths chips....yum

    doolittle

Hopefully I'll be there soon! We could have vegemite sandwiches together...perhaps you missed my response to another question...But One Should Never Kill a Croc!!! Their relatives will remember it long after you are gone and it could be that your great, great, great grand child gets a "limb" bitten off!

I think I'll save the meat pie for my visit to Scottland!
Bye the way...Don't visit Ireland unless you like BIG breakfasts and fish!!! (Their salads are pathetic-and bitter)
    leeroy

I might have to find some vegemite here in U.S., I've been hearing a lot about it for sometime now. Otherwise it will have to wait until I can visit. Australia is one of the countries I'd really like to visit... Very cool people and I'd be able to do a little surfing as well.
    lambshank

doolittle, love a big brekky, was reluctant to eat the croc (promise I didn't kill it)and leeroy would love to go surfing with you and eat vegemite sandwiches, if either or both of you get to the far north coast NSW would be honored to show you around
    bulletman

Little Doo the crocs that are eaten are not the wild procted croc, but farm crocs especially bred to be on a menu. --- if you venture all the way down south i will be waiting with a Vegemite sandwich. lol.

I live in the US.. I have noticed that food is regional.. You dont have to leave the states to  find new and exiting regional foods.. .But I sure would love to travel around the world.

    bulletman

Jenn , like here in Australia these exotic foods are usually nothing like the food of the country where it originated.

When in the Philippines, I recommend visitors bypass the dried fish, balot, blood soup, but sample their many varieties of fruits. The fruit durian is very tasty, once you get past the smell.

    doolittle

    Yummm- I Love fruit!

In germany you probably like to try Wiener Schnitzel and german potatoe salad or sauerbraten with dumplings. and a nice torte (Layer cake) for dessert.

    Bob/PKB

Yes, two slices of torte for me, please!
    Ann

Bob, You make my mouth water. I love Torte
    leeroy

Thanks Ann, on the subject of German food there is a really old and semi famous restaurant in FL, on St.Rd. 84 that has really good German food. Called the Heidelberg I believe. Good stuff. Especially the German beer, lol.
    Ann

Leeroy, We used to have German Restaurants here, but they are all gone. Its all Mc. Donaldas and Burger King now.

Ir ever here in SE Ohio ( just a little north of WVa ) try our chilly and cheese dog and a root-beer float.................lol

    clu

Love chili dogs with onions! Rootbeer floats are great too!!
    leeroy

Ohio has better pizza than Chicago in my opinion. Up around Youngstown I've had some awesome pizza. Must be the water?
    Headless Man

Some of the Amish restaurants are great also........

If you go to a scottish restaurant order a haggis and finnish it off with a couple of single malt whisky's. And with a piper playing in the background, thats what I call the real deal.

    dowsa

    "AYE" "Laddie"" "Warms the "Heart.

If you go to the UK or Ireland you must have fish and chips. In the UK the two best are the Anstruther fish bar in Fife, and in London, Kerbisher and Malt In Shepherds Bush Rd. I don't know the best in Ireland but you should drink Guinness, nothing beats Guinness except another Guinness.

    leeroy

I had one in downtown San Diego, it took them about five minutes to pour it and they made a four leaf clover design on the beer head. I'm not a big fan of dark dark beer, but this was excellent. Thanks for the interesting answer.
    Bob/PKB

Fish and chips with vinegar, of course. How about a pitcher of Guinness.
    nomdeplume

One food to avoid in fish and chip shops is the 'Deep-fried Mars Bar'. It is difficult to imagine a worse dietary item. I have never eaten one but sadly there are those who do.

I would not reccommend  or advise against any food or drink to a typical American visiting my country of origin Romania. While visiting the Amazon Peruvian area I offended an American part of our group for eating some food that was a local delicacy which to him was disgusting without even trying and he had the guts to tell me...

    ed shank

My step father was Romanian and after a visit back home, I remember him and my mother commenting on how bad the water was.
    valR

    In general, true.
