I don't have access to the story but I like Tolstoy, to me NOW means not 5 minutes later...........

Usually it means "this instant" but sometimes I make it mean "whenever I get around to it!!"             :)

The only time there is…is now. All else is illusion, fantasy, memory, projection, prediction, belief, denial and/or misperception. Eternity precedes now and thus “now” is the only true gateway to eternity where time does not exist. Time is the illusion of transient existence we abide within here. The purpose of time is to provide those born here with a medium of experience to grow beyond the need for time. Those who die here return just beyond now into eternity where they have opportunity to plan their next life to live in time and remain until they are ready to return in order to gain more experience. Eventually enough experience is gained that returning to time is no longer needed. However there is purpose in our acquisition of experience that transcends our eventual eternalization.   

I'm not familiar with your reference, but I can tell you "NOW" means "at this moment" and/or "without delay" to me.  

Right this minute.

To me, it means this very moment, without delay.
