    Write the improper fraction as a mixed number in simplest form 17/4

    17/4 is equal to 4 1/4.  The way to figure this is by simple division.
    Divide the numerator (17) by the denominator (4)     17 divided by 4  is 4 with 1 remainder.  4 1/4
    This works for all improper fractions.  Sometimes you may have to "reduce" the fractional part of the mixed number.  For example    6/4  is  1 with a remainder of 2    1 2/4.  2/4 can be reduced to 1/2, so the correct mixed number for 6/4 is 1 1/2.
