Has your child or a child you know been to a child psychologist?

If you know anything about how this relationship works, can you tell me: Do the parents listen and watch outside a one-way glass or are they in the room with the child and therapist?

Yes. My son has. He told him that sometimes he felt like a teepee, and sometimes he felt like a wigwam. The psychologist told him he was "two tents."

    Hmmmmmm? : )

Back during my nightmare days when they took my son away, they did a lot of counseling sessions with him and I was neither aware of them nor able to attend.  I didn't detect any changes in him but they sure tore me a new on in court..........

That is terrible, Julie. You should have been aware of them. If you were not able to attend, you should have received information on how the session went. If necessary, you should have been able to defend yourself. So sorry that happened to you.
It is absolutely not fair for parents to not know what’s going on. It sounds like it was in 1816 or something.

When our daughter first contracted multiple sclerosis unbeknown to us the frontal lobes of her brain were collapsing. Her behavior & attitude to things changed dramatically & it seemed that overnight this was not our Susan anymore. We were devastated.A case worker for the MS society suggested a psychologist be consulted to try to adjust this behavior.Unfortunately it was a total failure. In fact he was so far off in his judgement of things it made me quite angry at the time.Of course she was not a child. She was 26 then. Now she is approaching 43.There is nothing any psychologist can do for her.

As an adult I have had absolutely no benefit from seeing a psychologist. (unless I wanted a date) I have Anxiety Disorder and take medicine to keep me good.
I hope more people have information on child psychologists.
I hope your Susan is doing good. She sure has a good dad.

Thank you Itsmee, you're a treasure. But no she is not doing good.We are simply waiting for the inevitable now.

If you were around I’d give you a hug but this is all I can do

It depends on the psychologist, their methodology and training... You would be best to find a highly rated one with a search online.  Sometimes when one is recommended that doesn't necessarily mean that they are respected among their piers. Hope this helps a little?

I answered this under your Church going Christians question.

For those who see this and not the other site as regards Pyschologists. they only study human behaviour, a Psyhchiatrist on the other hand TREATS human behaviour and mental illness.

One thing to remember is mental illnes is just that, illness.

There is not the stigma attached as in the days of straight jackets and shock treatment.

Yes, I always assume that people are aware that the stigma of mental illness is gone. But you never know ... someone new could walk in our door. Good saying.

Why would a GP recommend a psychologist if he/she did respect him/her? I’m not even sure how to search online for a doctor. I think you have to pay. I will check it out, of course. Thanks, leeroy.

The above remark is in the wrong place. It’s a response to Leeroy.
