why would one of my cats poop in the spare bedroom on the carpet? She's never done that before....as least not on the main floor. Then, today, I found a pile of dry poop on the carpeted stairs going down to the basement. I've narrowed it down to Molly, my chubby female., whos 10 1/2. She used to poop on the basement carpet across the room from the litter box.She cut that out when the carpet was torn up.

Maybe Molly is seeking attention, or letting you know the litter box is difficult for her to access or needs changing (my cat won't go near a used litter box)

MYCATSMOM try this recipe it really does work and the cat should not go back there please read the lot it does sound to me that the cat is stressed out has any thing changed in the house new furniture redecorated anywhere! I know I have this problem with my cliants houses if they have cats and what we normally do is put one of the cats blankets on the beds so it has thier smell on it or one of you old jumpers please note not a clean one a worn one good luck . If the urine is recent, blot up as much of it as you can using paper towels or a sponge. Apply plenty of pressure to reach the dampness deep down. Stand on the paper towels for more pressure if necessary. If you own a wet/dry vacuum cleaner extract as much of the moisture as you can. If the urine has dried proceed to step two.2. Mix a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water in a jug or other container. Pour a small amount of this solution over the area of cat urine. I used about 50mls. Then begin blotting as described above to soak up this solution.
3. Sprinkle a good handful of baking soda over the stain.
4. Mix a quarter of a cup of hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent and drizzle it over the area where you have sprinkled the baking powder and work it in using your fingers (wear rubber gloves) or a brush. Leave it to work for 15 minutes then begin blotting again.
5. When the mattress is dry vacuum thoroughly. Use a hard bristled brush to loosen up the baking soda if necessary.
With a mattress it is very important to make sure it is thoroughly dry. If you live in a sunny climate the best idea is to put it out in the sun to dry. If you are unable to do this you can assist the drying process by removing it from the bed and standing it on its side in front of a heater or fan. Another idea from one of our readers is to use a hair dryer. Don't put it back on the bed until it is thoroughly dry.
That's all there is to it. It's as easy as that.
If you don't have hydrogen peroxide on hand you could substitute it in an emergency for a spray laundry stain remover. Check the bottle. If it says 'Oxy' anywhere on the label then it probably contains hydrogen peroxide.

To deter your cat from urinating on the bed purchase a plastic tarp and drape it over the bed. Your cat will not like the feel of it and hopefully it will discourage it from peeing on the bed. If it doesn't discourage then at least it saves your bed linen and mattress from cat urine.
I also recommend a product called SSScat. It is a motion activated spray which delivers a burst of air to frighten your cat away from an area. It is completely safe and harmless. For more information visit the website. SSScat. Very simple but very effective to keep cats away from areas that you decide are out of bounds. MYCATSMOM do a test first on the carpet when using OXI incase it bleaches it .as they are describing bedding

Molly's not sick. I think my boy cat did it. He was acting guilty today when I found dried poop on the 2nd basement step.
Have you moved her litterbox, used a different litter? .Does she have to share the litterbox? Is the litterbox in a noisy place? Is it cleaned on a regular basis? Cats are very fussy. Theire sense of smell is 14 times stronger than that of humans. .Other than that it could be lack of attention or she does not feel well.

It could be her age, of course. I keep the door to my room AND my spare bedroom AND my "clutter room" closed to keep the dog AND cat out of them. Bathroom, too. At least that narrows the "playing field" .

Sometimes it's stress, sometimes it's because youv'e changed something. Our male cat did it once when he came home from being in the cattery while we had been away, and our female did it once when we were fitting a new kitchen. Our male also sprayed up the inside of the patio door when our neighbours kittens came calling once.

Did the cat go two places or one? If she has to go up and down stairs to use her box , she may be getting aches and pains that make the trip difficult. She is aging or maybe you just ticked her off this day!!

It sounds to me that Molly does not like the placement of the litterbox. Each cay should have it's own box and most cats want a clean one. Some of the other answers are valid too- if she is larger than, perhaps, she should be she could be getting hip and back problems. She may want more attention. Has she had annual vet check ups? If not it is time to take her in to see one.
