Hearing a scream from the playroom, the mother rushed in and found her infant son pulling the hair of his four-year-old sister. No sooner had the mother returned to he chores than she heard more screaming. This time she rushed in and found the baby crying. "Now what happened?" she asked. Yep, all that, and there's also been a rather stressful journey through the birth canal, and now all this bright light, and, damn, it's COLD.

to inflate their lungs; and to give their lungs a workout, b/c he had never breathed for himself before. You might say that in utero, he was on a respirator ( the umbilical cord ) that did everything for him

It is making the transition from receiving it's oxygen via the umbilical cord  to using it's lungs for the first time....this requires the stretching of unused muscles and expanding the lungs for the first time...much like putting weight on a broken leg which has been immobilized for a lengthy period while healing...
