Far too complex for me to even contemplate. Wow. Saw a very interesting programme on how children learn different languages it was quite extraordinary, wish I could remember it. That old memory thing.
If I ask you the name of the country with the largest number of English-speaking citizens, you would say it's _____?
Chiangmai - what a brilliant question - it is now would you believe 4.25 AM and I am on my last legs. So far it would seem that The Phillipines are the third largest English Speaking country in the world. A guy rang here once selling something from a company - he was Phillipino during conversation he wanted me to help him with getting a nursing job in the UK - sent me the most amazing pictures from the Phillipines. The thing is everything is relative and it does depend I guess on population - I will check more and get back to you.

Also, contrary to what many people here think (the fact that knowing English is good enough), I feel that it's more advantageous to know more languages than just English. Besides, as you all know, a huge percentage of English speakers in America cannot even read and write well with the only language that they DO know.
Be careful, a lot of American jobs are being outsourced to India and the Philippines. Wake up, America, and stay competitive.

The JC quote was from Bill Bryson's book 'Mother Tongue'. it was supposedly said by a US politician. I don't know which one but I bet he was a Republican.
English may be easier for people who already speak a Germanic language, but learning English for Spanish speakers sucks!
Spanish is the easiest language to speak because all of the accents are marked and rules of pronunciation do not change from word to word. Although sentence structure and learning past-tense take a lot of practice.
