    DO YOU FLOSS?

I've read more than once that flossing is an element of a healthy heart.  Do YOU floss?

Yes, I floss every day and have done so for 40 years. I will soon be 70, have all my teeth and will keep them until I die. To keep your teeth, eat a good diet low in sugar, brush with fluoride toothpaste, and floss.

Fluoride is still being debated in a lot of places.
    nomdeplume

Everybody consumes fluoride even if it not added artificially to water supplies. Tea contains fluoride and all public water also.
It has been added to water in some parts of the USA for over 70 years. It is not the answer to tooth decay but until people learn to feed themselves and their children correctly it is a benefit.

    That says it all.

@nomdeplume...I've heard some say, and quite recently too, that it IS the answer to ALL tooth decay which I guess, is the reason that it is still being debated, after all these years.

We here in the UK are renowned for not having the best routines in dental hygiene, but I myself have never flossed, never felt the need, my teeth aren,t perfect by any means but they are healthy and clean enough with regular brushing and the occasional toothpick.

Try flossing after you brush and see how clean you got them, just with brushing. You will be shocked.
    Bob/PKB

    and horrified.
    mycatsmom

it's gross to brush without flossing first

Hi Bob did you know I read that flossing helps to prevent alzheimers...right back to the question yes I have OCD with the flossing I floss about 6 times a day I love flossing I also have a electric toothbrush have been using electric toothbrush for about 25 yrs

    Bob/PKB

I'll bet you get a discount from the dentist! It's amazing that something so simple as flossing can affect your heart and mind health. The e-tb is a good investment. It's going to be dug out of the drawer today. 2 minutes for better health. EZ Thanks, melandrupert!
    mycatsmom

that cracks me up, b/c I think it's boring to floss, but I do it 1 or 2 X per day .

@Bob/PKB Isn't that the same kind of question as "Do chickens have lips"?
    FISH-O

My friend Shasta, who is a chicken ( a fine one at that ) does have lips.
    doolittle

chickens do indeed have lips. they do not need to floss due to their diet.
    FISH-O

That is some gritty diet... aids in digestion as well. Woot!

Bob you know my teeth are pretty good.  My mom let a dentist pull four teeth when i was about 9.  i was born with perfect teeth.  me and all my brothers and sisters, white and straight.  having those four teeth pulled has caused me some problems.  but my teeth are ok.  i see my dentist 2 x's a year.  but i am sad i had those teeth pulled.  my mom did not know any better.  i don't even remember having any cavaties as a young kid.  but dentist have to make money somehow & my mom did not know any better.

Dentists used to pull teeth routinely, rather than fill them. It was just the norm. My current dentist cringes when she even talks about "pulling". Most do not do that now.
    Bob/PKB

It could have been your wisdom teeth, tabber. Those four are generally the ones we "have to" get pulled. My dentist recommended that for me when I was in my teenage years, saying they would push my other teeth together. I was wearing retainers top and bottom to get my teeth closer together. It didn't make sense to extract something that was going to accomplish what I needed, so they are still with me. My big mouth had plenty of room for them.

My dentist will attempt to "save every tooth" and that includes wisdom teeth.
    nomdeplume

tabber's wisdom teeth could not have been extracted at 9 years as they do not come through until about 18 years. More likely premolars (bicuspids US) to prevent crowding of the front teeth.
    mycatsmom

were they wisdom teeth or what? Were they hurting you before they were pulled ? If not, too bad you couldn't have sued the dentist

    Poor Mrs. Osmond.

I floss, use a pixie brush and water pick at least twice a day.

No, I don't. I don't have the teeth to floss.........

    mycatsmom

sorry .what happened to them? Did you mom not take you to the dentist to have them filled when you were a kid ? Or, did you have gum disease as an adult ? Eccessive smoking can cause gum disease and a loss of teeth. That's what happened to my dad's teeth. Whe I was only about 12, one of his front teeth just broke off. He was always carrying a pipe inbetween that tooth and the bottom tooth. Then the dentist removed all his remaining teeth. They used to do that ..... :-(

I brush a couple times a day and only floss occasionally, or when I have something stuck in my teeth.

    Bob/PKB

Same here, but I know flossing should be part of my daily dental routine.

at least 3 times a day. before bed, after meals, upon arising.  my dentist said i do not need to floss upon arising, but dr. oz said you should.  & i love and listen to dr. oz advice.

    Bob/PKB

That is dedication! I'll bet your teeth are lovely.

Every time I eat something . Had braces at 35 and it got to be a habbit . Brush about 3-4 x a day too.

    Bob/PKB

It's all good. Pretty teeth deserve the best care. You care!

Yes I do floss.  If you think that it's not necessary, then try this.  First of all, try an electric toothbrush, rather than a standard one.  You will notice a HUGE difference.  Brush your teeth thoroughly  (2 full minutes is what dentists recommend).  Now floss and see what is removed.  You will be astounded and realize how much is left behind, if you don't floss.

    Bob/PKB

    Astounded and horrified.

I certainly do. my mother taught how to floss when i was little. I've been flossing since then. If you don't floss, then the food and crap will stay inbetween your teeth and start to rot. It's gross

    Bob/PKB

    vivid image. not pretty.

    yes,every day.

    Bob/PKB

    I'm gonna do that, too.
    fjoel

    good for you Bob/PKB

No not me ..my teeth are like stars they come out at night...

    mycatsmom

LOL. It was the way you put it.
    daren1

    well what can i say..
    Bob/PKB

    Oh my.
    daren1

honestly i got all my teeth including my wisdom teeth,
    figtree3

It must be great on cloudy nights!

I use rope (big gaps between teeth). Does this count?

    Bob/PKB

Certainly. You can use 6-2 electrical wire if need be. What's important is to get the job done! :D

If the gaps between your teeth are large, use interdental brushes. These are like miniature bottle brushes and great for older people with gum recession.

    Bob/PKB

That's a good thing to know. I've seen those little things. Thanks, nomdeplume!

Yes, I floss. Even when I run out I might pull a loose thread off of a shirt. If you try this though make sure that the thread is not too thick because once you get it in there it may not come out easily. Not even floss can get it out.

    Thanks.

    Bob/PKB

That is an uncomfortable feeling, too, when something is caught between your teeth. Popcorn is my nemesis.

bob you are lucky to have that big mouth!

    Bob/PKB

Got me in a lot of trouble in high school, though, as you can imagine! :D
