Is there a safe and effective antivirus program that i can download from the internet for free, or would i be better off buying an antivirus protector program?

free would be nice, but whats the difference in safety for my pc? i've had 2 "fake" viruses recently and i'm afraid to go on the net without protection, microsoft said i should either purchase one or go on line to download one and i'm illiterate when it comes to this kind of stuff, i've had my pc for 1 year now and they said the licence on my original antivirus expires in about a year and i need to update? please help!

As good as or even better than any antivirus you can buy: Download AVG Free (use the green download button) http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition-2011/3000-2239_4-10320142.html I've used it for over 8 years and have never had a problem with any of my computers getting a virus. I am all over the internet Googling all kinds of information for the questions here daily so I think that's pretty good test ;)

i did what you said, Colleen, they said it is a 1 week trial version, then they want me to purchase the full version, so, after 1 week is up, does that mean my pc will be at risk again? the last 2 viruses i got from u tube. what other precautions should i take now? do i have to not go to utube anymore? sorry for being a pest, but i'm afraid to go online now. the 2 and a half hours on the phone with microsoft is well, you know, not fun. lol
