    There has been an elongated very bright star or planet in the sky this past week - what is it?

    At this time of year, before dawn, look for a bright star in the south or southeast sky. Orion's Belt points to Sirius, the brightest star in the nighttime sky.

    (I looked it up, not something I knew, darn...wish I was smarter)
