It would be fun to utilize them somehow outside of the site. I think the purpose of the karma points is to encourage people to actually READ others' posts. Who would care about what someone else wrote otherwise? We aren't, in general, that compassionate about how someone else feels.
By reading other posts, we begin to comment on them, which in turn garners other comments from the original source or other readers. Next thing you know, there is a camaraderie among the participants, and it just gets all warm and fuzzy after that.
It sounds silly, but I depend on many of these people every day to provide me with insight into myself and the world around me through their answers and comments. More than one has come to the site and asked for prayers and healing thoughts in times of sickness or other stressful issues.
Glad you are here and planning to be a part of a very nice community!

What are Karma points?
As you contribute to the community your profile accumulates Karma points. These points distinguish you as a respected member and one which opinion is highly regarded by the community. Gaining Karma points also opens up doors to some cool features in akaQA which are constantly added.
The karma points system is not intended for resolving personal conflicts between members.
Here's how karma points work:
Each "Thumbs Up" on your question or answer yields 15 point. Each "Thumbs Down" on your question or answer yields -35 point. Each "Thumbs Down" on someone else's question yields -10 points.
Number of daily votes
The number of daily votes you can give is limited and grows as you gain more Karma points.
