Nissan Sentra (2002): Check engine light has been on for a few months. Code indicates an oxygen sensor which my local mechanic replaced (twice) but didn't solve problem. Went to Nissan dealer who said the code indicated the sensor, but that the problem was the engine control module. I ordered and paid for ECM and had an appointment to replace it today. Three days ago the battery (which was very old) died, so I replaced it. Yesterday the check engine light went out and I have driven it about 100 miles since. Previously, the light had come on within 1 mile after it had been reset. Any thoughts?

That seems to be a big leap if not a guess to go from an oxygen sensor code then say it is a engine control module. If we are guessing I would say that the oxygen sensor did not have the required power that it needed to work right and after you replaced the battery it was there. Meaning your engine was drawing more power from your alternator in order to run and the sensor was not getting enough.

Best wishes and luck.
Computers aren't perfect i went through the same problem with a buick ,one way to fix this( dosen't mean it will work for you) is to disconnect the battery again and hold the positive and negative leads together for 2 minutes this will clear the computer, it's worth a try and does no damage..

Here are some problems that are more likely with Ecm
Problem With Nissan Sentra 2002 GXE?
I currently own a Nissan Sentra 2002 GXE with 62K Miles on it.
Recently I have certain issues with it.The Engine Starts to Rev Up ( Accelerate) Even In Park Mode and in Drive Mode with brake being applied.Twice this has caused 'Service Engine soon' 'Check Battery' 'Check Oil Pressure" indicators to come up and the engine stalled.
I feel sometimes the accelarator is not disengaged properly or feel like it is stuck up.
ahh the sentra is a ecu killer ..i would recommend taking it to the dealership cause if the ecu has failed than it "could" be covered under a emissions defect warranty also Nissan technicians are the most qualified to resolve abnormal drivablity issues ....

By replacing your battery you've reset your ECM. Prior to taking your vehicle to a mechanic in the future for an idiot light on the dash, disconnect the battery cables and hold them together for 15 seconds. This usually resets the computer. Your computer runs on milliamps (not 12 volts). Extreme care must be taken when checking the unit so as not to burn it out. If you've replaced the radio or added any other electrical components using "Unshielded wires" this will also cause electrical problems (bad signal to the ECM). Most store will not refund electrical items. Good luck.
