    why are some shops allowed to be open on christmas day, i thought it was our lords day

    Not everyone follows your lord. It's your choice to not work on his "birthday" (not really his birthday) or to not open your business (if you have one) on that day. The rest who are not Christian have a right to business as usual if they wish. 

    annelm- around here there are many people from different cultures/religions so it's easy for stores to staff Chrismas with non-Christians...but it is an interesting Q. Hope you get interesting answers.
