1. Fill the 3 gallon jug. Pour it into the 5 gallon jug.
2. Fill the 3 gallon jug again. Finish filling the 5 gallon jug. There will be one gallon in the 3 gallon jug.
3. Empty the 5 gallon jug.
4. Pour the one gallon in the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug.
5. Fill the 3 gallon jug and pour it into the 5 gallon jug.

After considerable thought, this answer isn't the smartest way to accomplish the quest. My other answer makes more sense.
Fill the three gallon jug and pour it into the five gallon jug. Mark the 3 gallon line on the 5 gallon jug. Then calculate where one and two gallons would be. Use a stone to scratch the mark into the side of the jug.
Empty out two gallons from the five gallon jug back into the 3 gallon jug, then add the third gallon to the 3 gallon jug. Pour those 3 gallons into the 5 gallon jug.
