There are many published incidents of this as an anonymous proverb since at least 1948, and as a statement of Eleanor Roosevelt since at least 1992, but without any citation of an original source. It is also often attributed to Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, but though Rickover quoted this, he did not claim to be the author of it.
I do disagree though. I agree with robert who said "The subject of interest is not a measure of intelligence. Intelligence grows by seeking ways to understand and use that understanding purposefully."

LOL . My mother said that .......I don't know where she got it, but there's a cornel of truth in most of those old sage expressions. She had an expression for every occasion. She said her mother did too. She said, '' Those who can , do. Those who can't , teach '' She said in conjucntion with that ---that math teachers are frustrated engineers. LOL. No offense to engineers. We've got a lot of them around here at Fords and G M

This question gives me the idea of taking a course in philosophy or psychology, but that action would just put me in a room full of people who think they are intellectually superior to others....I don't mean to talk about classmates, but, you know what I mean. Let's discuss it over coffee sometime!
