She just turned 7. I went to her birthday party last night. Her doll cost $125.00. I bought the dolly a red velvet dress and accessories and the total was $77.00. Would it make a difference if the gift givers were rich?

Maybe I’m having a bit of buyers remorse this AM. The child will have her REAL party tomorrow.

Bill, I’ve got this huge lump in my throat and I believe you! I do! I’m open to miracles. As you need to be!

Where is the guilt coming from ,and why ? Giving gifts should make the giver and the receiver happy. Its not the amount its the thought that matters . Child that age has no concept what something costs at that age . Only you do . You choose the memory to make and now you should find some enjoyment in it . Giving a gift should not create turmoil in ones mind . You need to put this down gently in your mind and let it rest .For better or worse its done and thats it cant change it ,appears you liked the doll so enjoy that. Best wishes for many happy days .       Bill

Your words “Put it down, gently” can certainly apply to my situation over the doll but they are words that will circle in my mind as we get deeper into December.

ITSMEE:Think of it like this : If on your last day you were sitting in a easy chair watching "THIS IS YOUR LIFE" which function on the remote would get the most use Replay ?? Delete ??? Slow Motion ???? Fast Forward??? Profound thinking perhaps ,but I think most often simple is the most true . Turn this loose like a balloon ,and smile . I think you will enjoy this later very much. You have a surprise coming this I promise!!!! From who or when I do not know ,but the universe has a way of surprising us when we least expect it . Just know it is coming. All that is required of you is to be excited and grateful with delight and surprise when it shows up. Maybe you tell me the story later . Its coming just believe ,this never fails . All my best Bill

I think no child of 7 needs a $125.00 doll.

i couldn't agree more , if you were to spend just 20 dollars on a movie and snacks ,they'll never forget that,

I bought my Grandaughter (3yrs)a kids digital camera for yrs 3+, £40. She never goes anywhere without it, money well spent for a change, and lots of " interesting " photos.

Yes, people want to buy things for kids and not do things with them.
That works short time but long time they will remember who spent time with them.

Colleen you are so right its ridculouse this amount of money spent on a child they will not thank you as they will have not learnt the value of money xxx

Kids are spoiled today, they expect to have the every hot thing because everyone has it, or so your told and parents will get it even if they can't make the house payment.

Then they grow up expecting the same thing, thats when life hits them and they haven't learned how to only get what you need and need very little.

Interesting comments. Comments that somewhat eased the “turmoil” in my mind.  Yes Bill, the exact word was turmoil. I will ease off that now.

I didn’t buy the $125.00 doll! The little girl’s mom bought the doll and mom suggested that I buy the red velvet dress and accessories.  I just KNEW that the child couldn’t appreciate the artistry of that little dress. No child could.

The doll was stiff and in a tight rectangle box with a plastic covering over it. I thought the doll was very ugly ... almost scary.

I suppose you can guess that I knew the mom very well... and the little girl.

Thank you for helping me with this one.

I could tell you a story about ugly dolls .My friend died and she had this thing with dolls some were quite scary and not super models for sure . Any way there were a bunch of them new in a box. I went to a Pow wow in mescalero Apache country before xmas and gave them away to little girls . Ill never forget the surprise and the smiles when the little girls got their dolls. Even the not so pretty ones were loved ! So Thank you for making me think once again of my friend and for recalling the pow wow memory . I am grateful !!! Hope you enjoyed my story !!!! Merry Xmas !!!!!! Bill

I enjoy everything you write, I think. We haven’t gotten into some discussions where you speak so I can’t say all. I pretty much ignore those discussions where people quibble back and forth. They pay the bills so I’m not complaining.

I love your pow wow memory. If I were raising my children today, I’d make sure they understood the situation of real poverty.

By the way, I don’t think my 7-year-old liked her doll. Sad.
