You hold the copyright of every original word you write. It isn't something you have to "get". It isn't even necessery to use the copyright symbol on a typescript.

The first thing you need is an agent. If you live in the UK I can tell you how to approach that... I won't say "get one" because it's very hard to find an agent prepared to take on new clients.

Publishers sometimes read typescripts submitted directly by writers but most will not.

If you live abroad you need to find literary agents in your own country.

NEVER, EVER, part with money to somebody who claims to be an agent. Scams like that abound on the internet and they can be very convincing.

An agent reads for free, edits for free if they think your book is marketable, and then does their best to place it with a publisher.

It's a long and difficult road. If you make it the first money to change hands will be via your agent to you... advance royalties.

Good luck... but don't give up the day job. I'm an agent's reader/editor. The agency takes on 3, at most 4, new writers a year. We receive 200 submissions a week.
