He may need hair between his pads trimmed, hard to see dust etc causes irritation.

1st i would check the paws and the claws just to make sur there arnt any injurys some dogs do this as they find comfort in this has anything changed inthe house hold like a new pet anybody left home that the dog liked have you being using different washing powder all these things can cause stress in all animals they dont like change if nothing has changed speak to the vet if you are concerned if the dog his licking of the fur then please take the dog to the vet sooner than later good luck

My dog will sit for ages licking her feet,it is thier way of cleaning and looking after thier feet.

Could be triggered by stress, both internal and external. He is a senior at 14 yrs. old.  Dachshunds are extremely intelligent and are bred for hunting. and are genetically designed to have a job. and get  bored  without having something to do. Dogs lick theire paws as a reaction to stress.

I agree that stress, and boredom, can be reason, I have a Lab that occasionally does that, and a friend has a Lab that licks his paws, on top, just about raw! I hate to see that. mine stops when I speak to him. That is why I say boredom.
