how do you refer to someone about a lesbian with out using the word?

I want to start a collection to buy flowers for this woman who is in the hospital and she is a lesbian, how do I ask certain people that don't really know her?

While I appreciate the effort for your friend to have flowers while in the hospital, your obsession with her sexual orientation is abhorrent.

    Well said Bob.

Why don't you just ask them if they want to donate to the flowers  and not worrry about her sexual orientation. It shouldn't be an issue

Agreed. Sexuality has nothing to do with it. She's a human being first.

do you always feel the need to state someones sexual preference when collecting for gifts?

This upsets me as I believe that all people are equal and by placing labels we are putting a person in a place..."Hey... over there is the Artsy Chick!", "Yeah, I know, she isn't the same as us!"

That is all I am going to say.

Refer to Emerson and Thoreau or any other brilliant mind.  No labels just the person and their value as a human being.

I don't understand why you think you should have to explain her sexuality to anyone.

    Is it really anyones business?

I think it,s you that,s making an issue of this when in reality there are none.

Let's pretend her name is Mary, okay?

"Mary is in the hospital and I'm collecting money so we can buy her some flowers.  Would you care to contribute"?

Why not refer to her as a friend , cause that's what she is...

Just say you are collecting for a sick lady or woman the fact is she is sick no-one wants to be ill . Use her name.

"I am collecting for a floral arrangement for XXXXXXX, who is in the hospital.   Would you like to contribute to her gift?"
Do you really need to say anything else?  Why would you ask people who don't really know her to contribute to a gift?

I think it might just be so that no one in the workplace (or wherever they are) feels left out?

    That makes sense, Ducka.

Crikey, how many flowers do you want to buy that takes a whole gang who do not know her to pay for?

What's wrong with the word Lesbian? What's wrong with being a Lesbian?

    It's just a word isn't it

It defines who you choose to be.

Homosexuality is not a choice. It just is and still does not need to be used when collecting money for flowers. One would not say, Sally the black woman is ill so I am collecting money to buy her flowers." Why say "Sally the lesbian is ill"? Sally is ill and in the hospital is enough. Nothing more is needed.

Yeah - Someone gave me a thumbs down for that ... I was ruminating on this later ... "I have this friend in the hospital with aids. She was born illegitimate and besides that she has two illegitimate children. Oh, and she's here in this country without a work permit, she's black, a lesbian, oh, and an atheist, well, actually she's a witch. Did I mention she's a Communist? Or Marxist, I can't remember which ... Anyway, would you mind contributing towards a bouquet of flowers?"

Someone gave me a thumbs down for that ... heh-heh ... you can't please'm all!!! Whoops, meant for that to be a comment ...

Please send me the name if you know it. I do not see it on your karma updates. I will message them. We do not give a TD for opinions.

No - he/she gave me a -1 for my answer, not my comment. I have no idea who ... didn't notice. No biggie.

I certainly hope last year when I recived flowers in the hospital no one said "Lila is ill and in the hospital, You know her, The chubby old lady in the corner" I also hope they didn't give the reason for my illness. ( I fell off the toilet ,hit my head and gave myself a cuncussion) Don't tell it's a secret.

Some times you don't have to say everything you know.
