It was a term used by the Amreican sailors to the English sailors from the 18th century because of limes given to the English sailors to ward off scurvy which was prevalent in those days. Capt.James Cook discovered by giving the men vitamin c , none of them would get scurvy, and in all of his five voyages not one of his men ever had scurvy it was then encouraged in all English Naval ships. the term carried on by the Americans to call all English people Limey's during both world wars..It was the same for Germans to be called Jerry's because of the Jerry cans used for storing fuel in the desert campaigns, which are still used today mainly by 4wheeled drives.
