    Thanks Colleen.

It has an opposite on a color wheel.

    valR

So one answer would be "as many opposites as many color wheels there are", agree?

Talk to an artist. A color wheel is a color wheel.

See answer from fishgirl...she is an artist.

Red, Blue and Yellow are primary colours... on a wheel... valR is correct.  Red does have contrasting colours.

The color across from? Is that not considered the opposite? I'm confused now for sure. (Good thing that I said talk to an artist!) lol

It would be comparing a primary colour to a secondary colour ... technically they are not opposite.
Primary colours are naturally occuring which is to say no other colours make them.
Secondary colours are made by two colours...ie - red and blue make purple... yellow and red make orange and blue and yellow make green.
Black and white are shades... black being saturated and absorbing light while white is the opposite.
Purple is considered the Universal Colour in that Purple goes with everything!

Hey fishgirl..thanks for that info. My art class from elementary school is coming back to me now. You always have to get to the right person, to get good info. :)

Just like black is the opposite of white, standard colors also have opposites. The result of putting opposite colors together is either a clashing or loud feeling, depending on which pair you choose. Below are the opposites for primary colors:

Blue is the opposite of Orange
Yellow is the opposite of Purple
Red is the opposite of Green
Black is the opposite of WhiteSource(s):
