For me, it is the furnace in the winter. Other than that, it would probably be the electric water heater. If you have old appliances, you'll find they use a lot more electricity than the newer models.

Install a timer for your hot water heater. You will save a hundred bucks a month. I did. It costs $40.00. Easy installation. Half hour.

    Sounds like a plan...thanks Ed.

The clothes dryer and Air conditioner.

Actualy unless you have a very old refrigerator t6his appliance uses little power.

Clothes dryer is a big user.

Plasma TV uses much more than LCD.

    Older washing machines big users.

Incandescent light bulbs use more than"power saver" types

Electric kettle/ frypan/deepfryer, all chew it up.

are there any more items, as my electricity bills are sky high and i have gas central heating also gas cooker

My "fireplace heater" is a real drag on the electricity, but it's less expensive than running the central heat (I'm only in one room at a time).  If the hair dryer and heater are on the same breaker, I can't use both at the same time, so I know it's pulling almost 15 amps on its own.
My clothes dryer  has a 30 amp breaker all to itself, so obviously that's big, too. I usually hang everything to dry except towels and sheets.

    the refrigerator....

A toaster. If left on all day would cost you your mortgage.

Doesn't a toaster pop up the bread or bagel after less than one minute? Do you mean a toaster over?

@Ed: Concerning that timer on the hot water tank. Does it really save that much? How much time does it take the water to become hot again? Where and what kind of timer, or just an appliance timer you can find at the hardware??
    ed shank

I save a hundred dollars a month since installing the timer. It's called "The little grey box" bought mine at home depot. $40.00. Easy install. About a half hour. Four wires, A diagram comes with it.

Ed,I will get the timer. My son can install it. Thank you for telling us.I have a Marathon Water Heater. What do you think is the best, cost efficient Water Heater?
    ed shank

@Ann. All heaters today have a rating sticker on them. The KWH (Kilo watt hour) rating is what determines the efficiency. The lower the better. I can't comment on which is the best unit, but they are all pretty much the same today. You'll have to ask a salesman for specifics.

Anything with a heating element.water heater, electric frypan, space heater.

    Bob/PKB

Small appliances aren't really big power suckers. You can have the frypan, coffee pot, and toaster all going at the same time (along with the refrigerator), and you should be fine. Adding the microwave might trip the breaker. (I am pretty sure about this, having worked as an electrician for a few years recently).

My wife uses the most electricity. She turns on the heater then the washing machine , dryer and coffee pot. Then goes and uses the hair dryer. The lights are all on and last thing before going to bed the electric blanket is on. When I get in beside her she has no power left for poor me.

    thank you daren1

how do you know its the refridgerator

    daren1

    try googling your question..

I have one of those meters that show what uses the most electric and its the microwave and the electric kettle it jumps up very high on both

    west-bus

Hi mel, I hope it doesn't jump too high, it might break on landing!!
    melandrupert

west-bus I think it might one day! oxox

Anything that creates heat, hair dryers are big juice suckers!

Electric heater, a/c , and probably hot tub too.

Well in mine I can tell you one appliance that does not drain the energy THE STOVE.

In my house it would be hot water, washing mashine and clothes dryer/., even though my appliances are fairly new.

I would haft to say it my cloth dryer is the most consuming energy in my house and the oven stove but that only when were cooking something like meat pie or apple pie, muffin ext.

Fortunately, I live in a community that has it's own utility company and is "grandfathered" in on an old law which keeps our electric cost at about 50% as compared to the rest of the state. I don't understand the law, but I definitely don't complain.

    Energy monitoring devices.

For as little as 20$ you can buy a good digital power monitor and check all your appliances and see what power they consume. There are many websites that have these devices and as an example you can click on the link below.
